Uptown USA was a proposed inner city retail shopping mall on two plus levels across multiple blocks, with bridge connections over the streets. The basement of the northern full block was to have been occupied by a bus terminal for the New York City Transit Authority, while the basement of the southern full block would have contained several levels of parking.
Occupying portions of three city blocks at the western foot of the Triboro Bridge in Harlem, the site adjoins the intersection of Interstate Routes 87 and 278, is just two blocks from a renovated Metro North commuter rail lilne, and abuts the proposed terminus for the extension of the Second Avenue subway. These transit and highway connections will provide unequalled access for customers.
Uptown NY would have served as the eastern anchor of 125th Street, the major commercial corridor of Harlem. The project woul dhave transformed its neghborhood, giving the city and the inner ring suburbs unparalleled access to major national retail chains and services. Later studies added multi-family housing to the mix.
