The Islamic Development Bank (abbreviated as IsDB) is a multilateral development finance institution that is focused on Islamic finance for infrastructure development and located in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, founded in 1957. There are 57 shareholding member states with the largest single shareholder being Saudi Arabia. This was an entry in an invited competition to build the Bank’s stand alone headquarters building.
Adjacent to a historic mosque, a cross axis opened up to the mosque and the massing stepped up to a highpoint on the opposite side of the site. The walls of the central atrium featured shading devices that took their inspiration from traditional mashrabiya screens of Islamic houses. On the south side a spine led to a hotel/spa facility facing a garden.
